Serpent Mound Crater
Original Garden of Eden? Strange Anomalies, 7 Cubic Miles of Rock Dust

Serpent Mound Crater

The most mysterious spot in Ohio, a 5-mile circle where gravity's pull is different and rocks stand on edge, has become ever more mysterious.

"The people who have looked at the samples are sure. It's one of the most mysterious places in North America. The Native Americans found something mystical there. And they were right." -Raymond R. Anderson of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources

Ohio's senior state geologist, Michael G. Hansen, prefers to call the cataclysmic event at Serpent Mound a "cryptoexplosion" - a word that means he's not entirely sure of the cause. Maybe, he says, it was a volcano. Or gas magma that blasted a hole in the earth's crust. "It's quite obvious that a cataclysmic event happened at Serpent Mound, but it would be speculating to say that the Native Americans saw the geology and figured it out," Hansen said. "Still, it's more than fertile ground for the imagination."

Of this Hansen is certain: A circular area of more than 12 square miles "suffered utter chaos" and 7 cubic miles of rock was smashed. At the center, the earth is uplifted "at least 1,000 feet above its normal position."

Hansen said sophisticated scientific instruments have measured gravity and magnetic anomalies at Serpent Mound, meaning that natural forces deviate slightly because of the subsurface disruption.

Scientists studying recent rock samples taken from beneath an ancient earthen mound are trying to determine what caused unusually high concentrations of a metal rarely seen anywhere but near Earth's molten core or in asteroids and comets." Iridium - iridium is the second densest element (after osmium) and is the most corrosion-resistant metal, even at temperatures as high as 2000 °C good enough for a ship to fly into the Sun? As long as you fly into a Coronal Hole. or did the Iridium come from the Sun ? The primary discoverer of iridium named it for the goddess Iris, personification of the rainbow, because of the striking and diverse colors of its salts.

Report published by the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources Division of Geological Survey concludes that a 5 mile diameter area of highly disturbed bedrock at the intersection of Adams, Highland, and Pike counties is a deeply eroded crater formed by a meteorite impact approximately 250 to 300 million years ago. This feature named Serpent Mound Disturbance after the famous prehistoric Indian effigy located near the southwestern edge of the disturbed area, is the single most complex geologic structure exposed at the surface in Ohio.

An investigative team made up of geologists formerly of the University of Glasgow (Scotland) became convinced of the impact origin of the structure after recognizing rock and mineral features. unique to impact craters in rock cores that had been collected from the site in the 1970's. The geologists also recognized evidence of an impact crater in geophysical surveys and satellite imagery for the area. The disturbance is still considered very unusual amongst the other known crater formations.

Paleomagnetic analyses of rock samples recovered from the drill core seem to indicate the impact of the meteorite  during the Permian period (about 250 to 300 million years ago) when continents were fused together into a single supercontinent called Pangea, and the area of present day Ohio lay just south of the equator.
